Austin Traditions: The Austin Film Festival
The Austin Film Festival is an annual festival that has been in existence since 1994. Unlike many other film festivals which pay attention to a director’s viewpoint and contributions to a film’s overall effect, the Austin Film Festival centers on a writer’s unique creative contributions to both the film and television industries. In addition to being a film festival, the Austin Film Festival provides a number of services and events, like workshops and lectures, for both emerging and professional writers and filmmakers. Past participants in the festival have included:
- Robert Altman
- Sandra Bullock
- Robert Duvall
- Dennis Hopper
- Sydney Pollack
- Garry Shandling
- Owen Wilson
The Festival is known throughout the industry for the access it provides to filmmakers and industry professionals. A notable film premiere for the Festival was the domestic premiere of the controversial film “Death of a President.” This took place in October 2006.
This year is the 16th Festival. It will be held some time in the middle of October.
