Health Care in Austin
Austin and the surrounding areas offer the best that modern medicine can supply. It serves as a base for innovative technologies that carry health services into outlying areas or extend it into the home. These technologies include remote telecommunications uplinks and telephonic monitoring systems.
The city itself has 2,500 hospital beds in 12 major hospitals. Some of the newer hospitals include the Austin Women’s Hospital, opened in 2004, and the Dell Children’s Hospital which just moved into a new complex. The variety of hospitals provide an array of specialized services for major trauma care, heart care, organ transplants, cancer treatments, and kidney dialysis. Other facilities in the area specialize in mental health services including chemical dependency treatment and counseling. In addition, several complexes offer health classes and fitness centers for individual and corporate clients.
Families who are experiencing traumatic injury or illness in a child also can find a supportive environment. The community is home to a Ronald McDonald House, located near the children’s hospital. Seton League House, near Seton Medical Center, also provides families with comfortable, affordable accommodations. Both of these facilities do not care which hospital is caring for a child, they only care that the family is care for.
In the event that a specific treatment is not available in Austin, Houston, and Dallas are both close to Austin. Hospice Austin and its Williamson County affiliate provide comprehensive in-home services for those with terminal illnesses.
