    Keeping your Home Secure

It is a sad truth that crimes can be committed anywhere, even in neighborhoods that are widely considered safe and peaceful. This is not a reason to be paranoid or fearful, however. There are a few basic steps you can take that will help your home remain secure.

    • Consider installing an alarm system. There are many different styles available, from those that will merely beep once when the front door is opened, to sophisticated systems that will dial the police automatically if your home is invaded. Research your options and consider which one would work best for your circumstances.
    • Do not show off too much. Keeping expensive items such as computers or instruments in front of windows may look like an invitation to burglars. All too many families use their garages as clutter storage rather than a way to protect their cars from thieves. Avoid that mistake.
    • Keep your landscape clear. Having bushes or overgrowth near your windows can make it difficult to see what is happening outside and give burglars a place to hide while they are trying to break in.
    • Do not keep a key outside. It is understandable why so many people do this; it can be very frustrating to be locked out of our homes. However, many thieves have caught on to this trick, including fake rocks or other hiding places for keys. It may be best to leave a spare key with a neighbor you can trust.
