Making your House Accessible to Senior Citizens

Senior citizens looking for retirement homes are a growing demographic on the real estate market. If you are selling your Austin home, there is a good chance that some of your prospective buyers will be sixty years or older. To increase your chances of a sale, you may want to take these quick and easy steps to make your home more attractive to older buyers.

    • Install guard rails or grab bars, particularly in risky areas like the bathroom. Standard locations include next to a toilet and inside the shower.
    • Minimize levers or knobs that would be difficult for a person with arthritis to use. For example, you may want to replace all door knobs with levers and install a sound-sensitive clap-on system for turning lights on and off.
    • Make sure every room of the house is adequately lit, particularly entrances.
    • There should be railings along all stairs or even relatively short steps.
    • If you do not already have a security system, you may want to install one.
    • A hand-held shower head can make hygiene much easier for someone with limited mobility.
    • Inspect your home for any conditions that may lead to falls, including loose rugs, cracked front steps, nails that stick out, and so on.
Taking these steps will not only increase your likelihood of finding a buyer, they can also increase the overall value of your home. Your older prospective buyers will also appreciate your consideration.
