    Moving with a Dog

Many people view their pet dogs as a member of the family. If it is possible, they will naturally be bringing their pets along as they move to a new home. Of course, dogs can be just as stressed by the process of moving - perhaps even more so, as they will have a more difficult time understanding why all these changes are occurring. Here are some tips for helping your dog make this transition.

    • See if you can keep your dog in a kennel or with a friend on the big moving day. This will keep him out of the movers' way, and greatly reduce the confusion and stress of seeing strange people come into the house and take everything away.
    • If you have the chance, unpack your dog's toys, bed, and food and water dogs before introducing her to the new house. Being surrounded with familiar sights and scents will comfort her as she explores the new surroundings.
    • Once you've moved in, take your dog on plenty of walks. You may be tired after moving and settling into a new area, but having a chance to explore the new neighborhood can go a long way towards easing your dog's mind. Lots of walks will also be good for releasing nervous energy and helping it relax.
    • Introduce your dog to your new neighbors. It will certainly be curious to meet everyone, and everyone else will probably want to know what kind of pet has moved in nearby.
