    Some Famous Texans

The state of Texas has always had a reputation for strange and interesting characters. If you are looking into Austin real estate, you are probably curious about the history of your prospective new home. Here is a brief list of just a few of the best known Texans throughout history.

    Stephen F. Austin

This activist and soldier is a key part of our state's history; in fact, he is often referred to as the Father of Texas. In 1824, he was hired by the newly independent Mexican government to recruit citizens to the large and remote territory of Texas. By 1828, he had arranged for more than 1200 American families to be settled in the area.

Austin served time in jail for protesting a law banning Americans from moving to the state, then participated in the Texas revolution. Later he served as the Secretary of State for the Republic of Texas.

    Janis Joplin

It is hard to believe that this musical star was once a UT student playing at parties and local bars. Born in Port Arthur, near Houston, she originally began playing in country and western bars in the area. She later moved to Austin and became part of the growing folk music scene. Her music career took off after she moved to San Francisco and soon she was playing around the world.

Rock's first female star tragically died in 1970 as a drug overdose. She was 27 years old.

    Molly Ivins

Journalist Molly Ivins earned her reputation as a Texan treasure through her sharp wit, Southwestern charm, and nearly prophetic political insight. She began with a modest job at the Houston Chronicle's complaint department, but quickly worked her way up to writing for the Texas Observer and the New York Times. Although her writing covered many topics, she is best known in this state for her humorous jibes at Texan politicians.

Molly Ivins died of breast cancer in 2007 at the age of 62. She is greatly missed.
