The Cost of Living in Austin

Texas has long been known as a very inexpensive place to live. As the capital city, Austin does not shirk its responsibility of being an affordable place to live.

One of the chief measurements of determining the affordability is its cost index. If the United States is listed as a 100.00, then cities with a cost index below 100 are more affordable and places with a cost index above 100 are less affordable.

Austin comes in at a 96.2 on the scale. This makes it one of the most affordable cities that is actually enjoying job growth and growth in general. The costs of housing, groceries, transportation, and even miscellaneous expenses come in at far below the national average.

The lower cost of living enjoyed by Austin’s residents means that a salary goes a lot further. A person making $100,000 in Austin enjoys a much higher standard of living than a person would making the same amount in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, or any a number of other large cities.

This means that that same person can enjoy many more of the nicer things in life than a person living in a more expensive area. This means a bigger house, nicer cars, more evenings eating out, and basically, more of everything.

While it is true that not everyone enjoys the same level of affluence in the city, it can be said that on the whole, Austin’s residents have a higher standard of living than individuals in many other cities.
