    Your Austin Garden

For gardening enthusiasts, one of the big treats of moving into a new home is having a blank canvas of a yard to work with. Unfortunately, some people make the mistake of bringing their favorite plants with them from their old home and simply trying to make them grow in a new climate. The truth is that most plants have evolved to fit in with very specific temperatures, precipitation levels, soil conditions, and so on. If you are wondering what plants will thrive around your new Austin home, consider these tips.

    The Climate

Austin is generally categorized as having a humid subtropical climate, meaning that winters are mild and summers can become very hot. Although our area gets an average of thirty-three inches of rain a year, much of this tends to fall in bursts of thunderstorms during the spring and fall. Long stretches of dry weather are not unusual here, and the sun shines more often than not.

The plants for an Austin garden should be sturdy, able to withstand high temperatures and both wet or dry conditions. Fortunately, there are many beautiful plants that match this description.

    Native Wildflowers

There are many benefits to planting wildflowers native to our part of Texas. For example, you already know that they are acclimated to our climate. Additionally, learning about them will be an excellent way to learn about your new hometown, and planting them will give your home an authentic Texan look. Some of our most popular wildflowers are:

    • Bluebonnets
    • Indian Blankets
    • Wine Cups
