The Pros and Cons of a First Floor Apartment

When looking for a new apartment, location will undoubtedly play a huge role in deciding where you want to live. But it is important to remember that it is not only the location of your apartment complex in a city that is important, but the location of your individual unit within the apartment complex that matters—especially if you are considering living on the first floor of the complex.

There are many advantages and disadvantages that come with living in a first floor apartment, and it is important to consider all of these before agreeing to rent or buy a residence on the first floor.

Advantages of a First Floor Apartment
If you live in a warmer climate, a first floor apartment can be advantageous as it is much easier (and therefore cheaper) to keep cool. Since warm air rises, apartments will be harder to cool the higher up in an apartment structure you go. If you like to keep a cool apartment, or are concerned about your electricity bill, a first floor apartment could be the right choice for you.

A first floor apartment also provides easier access than units higher up—which can be especially beneficial if you are considering living in a high-rise apartment complex. It will take you much less time to get to your apartment if it is on the first floor, and it will free you from walking up stairs or waiting for the elevator.

Disadvantages of a First Floor Apartment
While there are benefits to first floor living, there are also some disadvantages that come with the territory. While living on the first floor of an apartment complex provides you with easy access, it also provides any burglars with the same easy access. Typically, first floor apartments are more likely to be broken into than units located higher in a complex.

Also, if you live in an area that typically floods, a first floor apartment may put you at risk for flood damage. Before purchasing or renting a first floor apartment, you will want to check with the apartment owners and other residents to see if the area has a history of flooding.
