Lake Travis is of the seven reservoirs collectively known as the Highland Lakes, including Lake Buchanan, Inks Lake, Lake LBJ, Lake Marble Falls, Lake Austin, and Lady Bird Lake. Among these, Lake Travis has the largest storage capacity, holding over 380,000,000,000 gallons of water. It was impounded by the construction of the Mansfield Dam during Lyndon B. Johnson's presidency.

In addition to being one of the primary flood-control reservoirs on the Colorado River, Lake Travis is also a popular recreational and tourist site. At over 60 miles long and 4.5 miles wide, with some 270 miles of shoreline, the lake can accommodate a variety of water sports, lakeside attractions, and other outdoor activities. Boaters, water skiers, swimmers, and sunbathers can all enjoy themselves on Lake Travis. Other available activities include parasailing, windsurfing, and fishing. The lake is stocked with several species of fish, including largemouth bass, catfish, sunfish, striped bass, and Guadalupe bass.

Despite its large visitor count, Lake Travis is still in great condition. It is generally regarded as having some of the clearest and cleanest waters of any Texas lake.
