    Austin’s Crime Rate

In addition to enjoying a prime location near three bodies of water and with the varied terrain of the Texas Hill Country, Austin actually enjoys a crime rate that is noticeably less than the national average. On violent crime, Austin has roughly 3/4s of the national average for violent crime.

Violent crime includes things like murder, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. On murder, Austin’s rate is about half of the national average. All other indicators of violent crime are significantly below the level of the national average.

The city doesn’t perform quite as well on property crimes. Property crimes include things like arson, burglary, larceny or theft, and car theft. Overall, Austin has a property crime rate 40% higher than the national average, particularly due to burglary and larceny. Those two crimes are above the national average but everything else is below the national average.

This makes Austin a safe city for people and a slightly less safe one for things. The statistics do not report on how many of the theft cases are things like cell phones or calculators that are stolen when they are left out and taken by enterprising individuals but it is probably true that the majority of thefts are not of significant objects. Bicycles, calculators, and cell phones are probably the most commonly stolen items.
