    Austin's Film Industry

Austin is primarily known for its technological and academic jobs, but an entirely different field has been growing quickly in recent years. The city government welcomes the new source of income and is trying to encourage it by offering industry discounts to directors and actors who create their projects in our city. Bob Lander, president of the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau, has even expressed a desire to make Austin "the most film-friendly city in the US."

    Local Film Festivals

A director who wants to show off his or her work has many options in Austin. Many film festivals honoring a variety of genres take place here every year, including:

    • The Austin Film Festival, a competition held every fall
    • The Austin Gay and Lesbian International Film Festival, the oldest and largest GLBT film festival in the Southwest
    • Cine las Americas, a bilingual Latino festival held every May
    • South by Southwest, a city-wide event showcasing new films, bands, and technology
    • Austin Asian American Film Festival, a showcase of documentaries and experimental films
