This is a city-wide celebration of music, movies, technology, and art. Every year since 1987, when it was known as "Battle of the Bands," some of the country's biggest names in independent music and cinema have come to the city to perform for packed crowds. Originally a television program that showcased Texan musicians, ACL expanded to a live music festival in 2002. Since then it has grown to one of the most exciting musical events in the country. Once a year, from Friday to Sunday, some of the countrys most well known artists and some of the best independent bands come together along with thousands of fans in Zilker Park. 2008's lineup included the Foo Fighters, Beck, Neko Case, and Iron & Wine, just to name a few.
This delightful festival began as a party for University of Texas students in 1963. Usually held on the last Saturday of April, it features activities for people of all ages. Vendors sell delicious food, beverages, and beer from local businesses. Families enjoy old-fashioned fun like costume contests and sack races. There is always plenty of dancing and music, including drum circles that can include over a hundred people.
