Austin Landmarks
Austin is home to a number of visible and popular landmarks. Three of the most visible and popular landmarks are the State Capitol, Mount Bonnell, and the Driskill Hotel. In addition, Hogg Mansion, the governor’s residence, is nearby.
Mount Bonnell , located northwest of downtown Austin and named for a journalist and soldier who fought in the Texas struggle for independence, Mount Bonnell is one of the best places in Austin to gain a general perspective of Austin and offers unrivalled views of the city. The monument stands at 750 feet and is accessible by 100 steep, stone steps. The monument offers unparalleled vistas of Austin, the hills, and the Colorado River.
The Driskill Hotel is widely rumored to be haunted. Built in the late 1880s by Jesse Driskill, the stately hotel was used by the state legislature while the capitol was being built. The original part of the hotel, four stories, is ornate and features a very large archway in addition to the two-story porches and Romanesque revival columns. The restaurant was the site of Lyndon Baines Johnson and Lady Bird’s first date.
The State Capitol is the largest of any capitol building in the country. It is actually slightly taller than the United States Capitol Building. The spectacular rotunda is at the center of the intersection of the main corridors while other tunnels connect the capitol with other state buildings. In years ending in odd numbers, visitors can watch the legislative proceedings from the third-floor balcony.
