    Baby Proofing a New Home

Many people looking for a new Austin home have decided to move because they need more space for their expanding families. If you fall into this category, you may be wondering about the important issue of making your new house safe for infants and very young children. This article will provide some basic tips for baby proofing your new home.

    • If you are moving into an older home, inspect it carefully for loose boards, non-sturdy railings, nails that stick out, and other potential hazards. Houses older than thirty years or so were not usually built with modern safety standards in mind, and may certainly have experienced some wear and tear over the years.
    • Keep in mind that the water systems in older homes may also not have as sophisticated temperature control as modern designs. Always check water temperature carefully before placing your child in the tub or washing his or her hands or face.
    • Install lid locks on all toilets to keep a curious child from drowning, or from accidentally allowing the lid to slam on his or her head or hands. Keep toilet lids closed at all times.
    • Consider installing carpeting throughout the house. This will cut back on the risk of slipping and can provide a softer landing if a child does fall.
    • If your new home has a garage, check to see how its door reacts when it closes on something. A safe garage door should re-open if it comes into contact with anything while closing. If your new garage door does not have this feature, install it.
