Camping around Austin
One of the benefits of living in an Austin home is the chance to explore the perks of urban life while still having easy access to nature. If you’re in the mood for a short walk or an afternoon hike, there are dozens of parks and trails within the city limits that provide just that. If you’re interested in an extended camping trip, you have plenty of campsites a short distance away to choose from.
Bastrop State Park
Merely a half-hour drive from Austin, this park features 5,926 acres of Central Texan beauty. The campsites range from primitive set ups (cleared spaces for tents) to air conditioned cabins with full kitchens. Whether your idea of a vacation is roughing in the wild or enjoying a round of golf before jumping in the swimming pool, you will love Bastrop State Park.
Lyndon B. Johnson State Historical Park
This may be the perfect vacation spot for nature loves and Texas history buffs. It is located in Stonewall, about an hour’s drive from Austin, and admission is free. Visitors can tour the Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm, a replica of a turn of the century German Texan farm, or catch the shuttle to the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park. This tribute to our former president and his wife features artifacts from the Johnson presidency, educational programs, and interactive displays.
Longhorn Cavern State Park
This natural attraction is about one hour outside of Austin in the town of Burnet. You can explore the intriguing cave known as Longhorn Caverns and learn about its rich history, from the prehistoric people who lived there to the outlaws who have hidden there. The park also a great place to camp, hunt, fish, swim, and explore nature.
