Choosing a Roommate
Sharing a home with another person can be more than a way to save money. Many roommates become friends over time, and some form close relationships that last lifetimes. Even if you and your roommate never become close, you can still enjoy a friendly relationship, not to mention having another person to share chores with.
If you choose the wrong roommate, however, the results can be a disaster. People with conflicting views about cleanliness, chores, money, and other issues can quickly make each other miserable. To avoid this kind of conflict, think carefully when selecting a new roommate.
Steps to Take
Whether you are searching for a roommate by placing an ad or asking around among friends, keep the following tips in mind during your search:
- Schedule an interview. Even if your friends think that a certain person is the perfect roommate for you, this is a decision you have to make for yourself. Invite each prospective roommate over to show them the house and ask some important questions.
- Be completely honest. If there is behavior you cannot stand, such as loud music or untidiness, you need to make that clear before another person moves in with you. If you and a prospective roommate are incompatible, you want to find out before he or she moves in.
- Look for warning signs that a person may be difficult to live with. You know what kind of personalities you do and do not get along with. Do not feel guilty about turning down a potential roommate if you sense that you could not live with him or her.
