Credit Scores
Credit scores are extremely important. This is why it is crucial that people understand what credit scores are, how they are calculated, and how they are used.
Credit scores, first and foremost, are numbers ranging from 300 to 850. They reveal, at a glance, an individual’s credit history. They give an idea about how someone has dealt with money, whether debts have been paid back on time, whether bills have been paid in a timely manner, or whether contracts have been breached. While the number itself does not mean any one of these things in particular, it gives an overall picture of a person’s financial history.
Credit scores are calculated by three companies in the United States. These companies receive information about people’s financial activities (privacy laws are not violated) and based on that information, calculate the credit score. If they receive information that somebody broke a contract, for example, that individual’s credit score will be lowered.
Finally, it is important to understand what credit scores are used for. Credit scores reveal information about people’s financial behavior. As a result, they also reveal how responsible people are. So, when people apply for a loan, for example, banks use people’s credit scores to decide how much of a risk they are. Moreover, employers check credit scores to determine whether potential employees are responsible or not
