Home Safety Tips for the Holidays

The holiday season is a very joyful time of year. The visiting relatives, the decorations, the parties, and the food all contribute to the festive atmosphere. To make sure you get the most out of your holiday experience, you should take several safety precautions when decorating and preparing your home for guests.

    Christmas Trees

When choosing a Christmas tree, there are plenty of things to consider. If you are purchasing an artificial tree, make sure that it is flame-resistant. If you are purchasing a live tree, make sure that none of your potential house guests are allergic. Also, choose a fresh tree, not one that is dry and has brittle needles, as this is a fire hazard.

    Pet Safety

If you have pets in your home, be sure to secure your Christmas tree, so that they are not able to knock it over. Use caution when decorating your tree with tinsel, as it can be harmful if swallowed by your pet. Also, don't let your pets drink the Christmas tree water, as it may contain various pesticides and other harmful bacteria. Furthermore, real mistletoe can be lethal to pets.

    Lights

Only use lights that have been properly accredited by a safety testing laboratory. Be sure to tightly secure decorative lights to trees or the walls of your house. Always be sure to unplug all indoor and outdoor lights before leaving your home or going to bed.
