The MS 150
The MS 150 that goes from Houston to Austin every spring is the country’s largest Multiple Sclerosis bike ride. This year, 13,000 cyclists will make the trek in hopes of raising more than $10 million.
The year 2009 marks the 25th anniversary of the event. Since it was started in 1984, the event has grown into the largest event of its type in the country. With 13,000 cyclists, 5,000 volunteers, and more than $15 million raised for research and treatment in 2008, it is easy to see how the event is a big deal.
While it does not start in Austin, the event definitely finishes there. The event starts from various starting points in the Houston area. The MS 150 had only one starting point for a number of years but then it grew so much they had to split it. The logistics of thousands of cyclists gathering in one place got to be too much for organizers.
The path takes the cyclists through the eastern part of Central Texas. In April, which is when the event is held, cyclists get to view miles and miles of blue bonnets and other Texas wildflowers, all while raising money for an excellent cause.
When the cyclists eventually make it into Austin at the close of the second day of biking, their efforts are applauded by the city. There is always a concert and barbeque waiting for the exhausted cyclists in downtown Austin as a way of rewarding them for their hard work.
