Tips for College Renters
Many college students will want to either rent or buy a house to live in off campus with friends following, or sometimes even during, their first year of college. Most college towns have numerous available houses and apartments that are perfect for college students.It is important for students to be aware of some important things they will want to consider in their search for the perfect apartment or house.
Looking for the Right House
- If you are renting, what is the length of the lease? Does the home have a one or two year lease or will renters pay month to month? This will be important because it will affect when you have to give notice to your landlord if you want to terminate your lease.
- Are utilities included in the rent? If so, which utilities? What will this due to your overall cost of living?
- Are pets allowed? If they are, do you have to pay a separate pet deposit?
- What cleaning, repairs, and other services is the landlord willing to do? This is especially important because if something breaks or is faulty since you will need to know the fastest way to take care of your problem, which may or may not involve contacting the landlord.
- Do you need to secure your own renter's insurance, or will the landlord's insurance for the building cover your house or apartment and personal belongings in the case of fire, theft, etc.?
