Home Architecture: The Victorian House
Victorian Homes
The homes in Austin’s historic neighborhoods are the pride and joy of their residents. Areas such as Hyde Park and Old Enfield, among others, boast beautiful Victorian-style houses constructed a century or more ago. They are careful to take care of their impressive homes, ensuring that they remain in good quality despite their old age.
History
Victorian architecture was developed during the reign of the British queen for which it is named, from 1837 to 1901. Its popularity did not end with her death, however, and many Victorian style buildings were actually constructed during the reign of Queen Anne, Victoria’s successor. This can make it somewhat difficult to properly label a building’s architectural style, especially considering that Victorian architecture has many different subcategories.
Although it was first developed in the UK, this style has spread to many different countries, particularly former British colonies. Cities that are especially known for their variety of lovely Victorian homes include Melbourne, Australia; Glasgow, Scotland; and Galveston, Texas.
Features
The Victorian homes constructed in Austin in the 19th and early 20th centuries are loved for many of their features, including:
