Suburbs Long for Developers to Build Industrial Space

July 23rd, 2010

Austin suburbs like Cedar Park, Leander and Pflugerville are trying to convince developers to build industrial office space. The city has plenty of vacancies, but the suburbs have businesses fighting over the few options that are available for office space.

The Austin Business Journal says, “Economic development directors agreed that while they believe they can fill the available buildings, the biggest problems are the lack of financing and aversion to risk.” In this economy, it is hard to convince a developer to take a risk and build yet another building. That does not stop the suburbs from hoping.

According to the Austin Business Journal, “‘It’s like a never-ending courtship,’ said Phil Brewer, director of Cedar Park’s economic development department. ‘Every time I have the ear of a developer, I try to convince them to build something here because we will fill it.’”
