Destination Living and Traffic Influences on the Austin Market

March 30th, 2011

We’ve all been there, sitting in traffic on MoPac or I35 trying to get home after a hard days work. Yes, Austin’s traffic can be terrible and Austin has recently been given the distinction of the 4th worst traffic city in the country according to research by INRIX. This report found that on average, commuters on I35 face 460 hours of bottleneck traffic a week. Joe Taylor, traffic reporter for News 8 Austin states,“It’s the most traveled stretch of roadway of Austin and in the state… It’s quirky. It was designed for a small town, and we’ve grown into a very large city.”

One way commuters are trying to cut their time on the road and avoid inadequate city infrastructure is by living in residential communities within a short drive, bike ride or even walking distance to work. New developments have popped up in The Domain, where many of Austin’s tech companies reside, that allow families to enjoy a much shorter commute, while maintaining access to metro areas during non-peak hours.

Austin has also seen a spike in moped sales, as more and more people are turning to transportation that allow for a quick commute, while saving four to five times the amount of money spent on gas and maintenance.

A difference of 5-10 miles can easily add 45 minutes to an hour to one’s commute, so these developments are perfect for families looking to have more time with each other and for themselves.
