Parks in Allandale

August 17th, 2011

The Allandale neighborhood has a combination of city life and green open space. In Allandale, residents get the best of both worlds; the downtown nightlife and the abundance of outdoor amenities and recreational facilities. In fact, Allandale hosts one of the largest Central Austin parks which is the Beverly Sheffield Northwest District Park. This beautiful green space is perfect for picnics, big group gatherings and sports. In addition to the pond and shady trees, this park boasts 8 barbeque pits, fishing piers, picnic tables, swimming pool and several miles of running trails. There are also basketball, volleyball and tennis courts.

In addition to outdoor parks, Allandale is home to Northwest Recreation Center. It originally opened in 1979, but in 2010 NRC went through an extensive makeover. The upgrades include a 7,500 square foot extension that will feature two classrooms, two multi-purpose rooms, a kitchen, a lobby and a gymnasium. Flat screen televisions, laptops, cable and wireless internet were also added throughout the Center. The gym, which is not yet open to the public, received new glass basketball backboards and a volleyball setup. Medicine balls, jump ropes, elastic bands and dumbbells were added to the fitness room. The Recreation Center has programs for families, teens, and toddlers including dance and exercise. Additional facilities include arts and crafts, weight rooms, dressing rooms, pool tables, tennis tables and sand volleyball courts. This park also offers a secure and varied environment for all ages. A fenced-in area makes a perfect dog run, with plenty of room to play fetch. Northwest Recreation Center was also designed to be a “green” facility. Water is funneled from the roof into a series of canals surrounding the building. The landscaping surrounding the facility is drought tolerant and requires little maintenance.

Northwest Recreation Center hosts several programs such as Toddler Programs, Teen Outreach, After-School Programs, Summer Day Camps and is pleased to have Sportball, Yoga and Jazzercise. Yearly special events include Halloween Trick or Treat Path, Mother-Son Dance, Kite Workshop and Show, and the Father-Daughter Dance.
