The Draw- Austin Job Market

August 22nd, 2011

Austin, Texas – For some it’s a vacation spot, for other’s it is home. Being the fourth largest city in Texas, and the 14th most populous city in the United States can definitely have its perks- especially when it comes to job opportunities.

Whole Foods Market is a company committed to helping support the health, well-being and healing of both people and the planet. It is a company that many people would not think to work for, but it has been recognized by FORTUNE magazine the past 13 years as one of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” in America. With its headquarters located in Austin, it is a prime example of job opportunities this city has to offer. Whole Foods provides its employees with  many benefits including medical, dental, and vision plans, as well as 401(k) retirement plans and paid time off. Another company in Austin that offers great benefits and a fun atmosphere is Central Market. They offer free cooking school classes and many career paths with the opportunity of growth within the company.

Every year, thousands of engineering graduates from UT are providing Austin with a steady source of employees that help fuel Austin’s technology market. In 2010, Facebook decided to make Austin home when they accepted a grant to build a downtown office. Facebook’s new office could supply as many as 200 new jobs for the city, and in a company that is constantly growing and changing the number of job positions will only increase.

Austin is also emerging as a prime entrepreneurship scene, and even offers a program to help you get started. RISE, Relationship & Information Series for Entrepreneurs,  is a non-profit program dedicated to inspiring and empowering entrepreneurs. Starting off as week long, free “un-conference” held by entrepreneurs, RISE has grown into an ongoing, annual program dedicated to empowering entrepreneurs. RISE is continuing to grow; providing more small-group sessions, entrepreneur membership groups, and additional professional events.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Austin is the third most innovative city in the country. Home to large festivals and events such as Austin City Limits, South by Southwest (SXSW), Pecan Street Festival, and BatFest, Austin is always finding new ways to bring in revenue. Pecan Street Festival is the oldest and largest art festival in Central Texas and attracts over 300,000 people per event. With three different stages showcasing artists on the rise, and artists displaying homemade art and craftwork the Pecan Street Festival generates $43 million in economic impact. SXSW, is another huge money maker for the Austin community. Each spring downtown Austin is home to more than 2,000 performers in over 90 venues- easily supplying Austin businesses with an increase in revenue. SXSW is Austin’s highest revenue-producing special event and had an economic impact of $110 million in 2008 alone.

With constant high-grossing events and festivals, high-tech companies, and a budding entrepreneur scene, it is no surprise that people are drawn to Austin. Austin is an ever-growing city of opportunity that will continue to thrive in the hardest of economic times.
